I have started buying the Digital Photo Magazine. I like the way that rather than being about kit, or about how wonderful other peoples fotos are, it is all about ideas of photos to take, and then ways of processing them.

The only real problem is it only includes tutorials that use Photoshop CS or Elements, neither of which I have. I have a legal copy of Photoshop 6.0 (on a desktop PC in England unfortunately) which I have never had the money to upgrade. Most of the time I use the Gimp and I wish that they would occasionally include tutorials for that. Nonetheless I can sometimes modify the lessons and come up with some pretty impressive results.

This tutorial used adjustment layers to create a split toned image. The example in the mag used a Las Vegas hotel corridor, so I swapped that for my own image taken on the Hoek van Holland to Harwich DFDS ferry. In my own opinion this version adds a lot of tension and feeling to the original, which is fairly boring.

My son in Georxx, a bar on Georgstrasse, Hannover, having a hot chocolate without cream (which he asked for himself, without help.) German bars, unlike the ones in the UK, are happy to allow children in during the day, and more than happy to let you drink coffee or hot chocolate.

This was manipulated following a tutorial from the UK photography mag ‘Digital Photo’, the march 07 issue. It was meant to be a textured portrait, but this wasn’t the right image for the technique. I did like how the frame turned out though, so I deleted the centre area of the texture and left it like this.

So tonight I was on www.stumbleupon.com and I "stumbled upon" this website catering to plenty of Adobe Photoshop tutorials. One carrying the name of "Manipulate Smoke To Create Hyper-Real Images" so I opened it and began.

3 hours and 2 cups of Chocolate Soy Milk later, arose this; my rendition of the photo given for the tutorial (Smoker). The tutorial is a perfect, in-depth explanation of exactly what you need to do step-by-step in an easy, simplified manner.

Maybe I’ll do this again one day with another one of the tutorials hosted on this fabulous website.
