As we have undoubtedly heard our entire lives, a picture speaks a thousand words. And while that may be true of most, there are those who seek to tell a bit of a story with their works. Editorial photography, and perhaps some would say to a lesser degree fashion photography, is an area where a lot of effort goes into creating a story out of the piece. Through the costuming and composition, these shots come to life and their stories are told to the masses.

Flashes in the Dark: Low light Photography

Photographers put a lot of focus and emphasis on the lighting for their pictures. After all, lighting is a powerful instrument in setting the overall tone and feel of the piece. Even when there is very little light to work with. In fact, it is in these situations that the lighting can create extremely emotive and distinctive compositions for the pics.

Giving the shadows so much reign to run freely, carving interesting depths and crevaces into the pieces. This can also prove very tricky for photographers as some equipment does not work as well under these conditions, and cannot take sharp, clear photos without enough lighting. Though in some cases, as we can see in a select few below, this can also give the images more tone and texture that fits well with that particular composition.

Dynamic Look at Life: Collection of HDR Photography

As we have talked about in the past, photographers capture moments of life and present them to us in much more visually enhanced ways. Allowing a new tint to be laid atop the world as we traditionally know and experience it. Especially when those photographers turn to HDR. By increasing the range between the lights and darks of a set of images these artists create some truly breathtaking effects when those images are combined or enhanced.

When artists get an idea poised for realization, there are many ways that they take these concepts and bring them to life. These artists, usually working in more abstract arenas, craft these concepts from their imaginations into the physical world by many means. Photography however, is not one of these areas that we tend to think of when it comes to more abstract and conceptual work. Photography to most is more concrete an artform, or at least that is how many of us tend to view it. But conceptual photography is a dynamic, thriving form of art that is worth taking note of.

Especially for those looking to be inspired by photography in new ways. These photographs are more thoughtful than just aesthetic. They are rooted in the artist’s vision and seek to get the wheels in your mind turning, not just impress and awe you with their astounding visuals. It is much more an intentional construct and composition designed to move and connect with the viewer in deeper more meaningful ways than most traditional photography.

Photography is such a vast field filled with so many amazing techniques and tricks for taking the world around us and stealing moments from it with often breathtaking results. One easy way for photographers to add emotion and impact to their captures is to strip them of color. B&W photography has such a knack for delivering such impactful pieces simply by taking them down to more basic levels and allowing the tone to be set in a much more subtle, yet evocative way.

As winter’s grip tightens on numerous areas around the world, the shortened days can be filled with so much beauty and emotion with the generous application of snow. This pure and frigid precipitation can take even the most plain of landscapes and cover it in a layer of personality that it would otherwise lack. Over the summer we put together a couple of photography posts where we created color palettes to accompany each of the pics. With the fall kicking off a sweeping change of nature’s color palette, we thought we would turn our inspirational spotlight once more in this direction.
