<p>Since their inception, <strong>video games have provided great inspiration</strong> for offline artists and digital artists alike. Video games generally adhere to a fantasy theme, which is perhaps what makes them so intriguing visually. Often characters are exaggerated human forms, with bulging bodies, enormous power, or great speed and agility. Many games include characters of another species, possessing magical powers and skills. </p>
<p>Undoubtedly video games offer some of the richest character designs. Of course video games don&#8217;t stop at character design. Entire worlds are invented for these characters to inhabit, and whilst they range from the minimal, to the vast and sprawling, these worlds are often visually intriguing. </p>
<p>Today we&#8217;ve compiled over <strong>50 examples of wonderful digital art</strong> inspired by the video game format. These illustrations range from depictions of famous characters, to epic battles, landscapes and even text effects.</p>
<h3>Digital Art Inspired by Video Games</h3>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Ry_Spirit_8217_s_Video_Game_Art/725/4">Ry Spirit&#8217;s Video Game Art</a></p>
<p>Ry Spirit is a hugely talented digital artist who has built up a Facebook following in the thousands. His work has very unique style, being both bold/colorful and cartoony. Whilst some of his work does include sharp outlines, generally his compositions have quite soft edges, with a certain handdrawn feel to them. </p>
<p>We get a real sense that these pieces have been &#8216;painted&#8217; rather than simply filled in with color in Photoshop. The rich shadowing and textures really make this work stand out.</p>
<p>Ry&#8217;s work generally put characters at the forefront. Interestingly he captures each character doing something indicative of their existence. Rather than simply placing a character on a plain background, he&#8217;ll have child-Link waking up in his bed, or pokemon mid-battle.

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Sandara_Video_Game_Art/725/17">Sandara Video Game Art</a></p>
<p>Sandara is widely known for her detailed, realistic fantasy artworks. She truly manages to capture the essence of each character she observes. Generally her work will utilize lighting very well, engulfing dark characters in deep shadows, whilst using glows/rays of light to bring life to the piece. </p>
<p>There is definitely a sense of fantasy in her work, as her compositions tend to focus on magical creatures (dragons, elves, wolfmen etc&#8230;). She also tends to base each piece around a certain color palette, which evokes the mood in each composition. Below you can observe a magical couple amidst a purple, romantic landscape, or a fierce warrior, fighting through a fiery, amber scene.

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Nezma_Video_Game_Art/725/29">Nezma Video Game Art</a></p>
<p>Nezma (otherwise known as Nat from Canada) is a talented digital artist with a penchant for capturing the magical world of video games. Her work shows tremendous diversity, as you can see from the examples below. She ranges from soft, cartoony drawings, to sharp vector designs, and realistic digital paintings. </p>
<p>What is admirable is that whatever medium she chooses, Nezma manages to capture the true essence of her character. The pieces below show great attention to colors and lighting and range from cute to ominous.

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/DXSinfinite_Video_Game_Art/725/35">DXSinfinite Video Game Art</a></p>
<p>DXSinfinite has some truly inspiring digital art, much of it based on video game characters. Again, this artist shows tremendous diversity in his work, and can capture an anime scene, or a highly realistic depiction of his favorite character. </p>
<p>His work shows great attention to form, with the vastly bugling muscles of many video game characters providing a wonderful study of the human body. We get a sense of power and energy from many of his works, and he truly captures the might behind some of these popular video game creations.

<p>Last, but certainly not least, GENZOMAN whose works are some the of most favored fantasy digital art in the collection. His work is rich in texture, lighting and details, resulting in a realistic, yet still very much fantasy outcome. He often combines his expert shading and digital painting skills with intense light effects in Photoshop, generally used to demonstrate the explosive powers of the characters he is capturing. </p>
<p>The backdrops for these characters are equally rich, and really place each creation in their natural setting. Each composition typically uses very bold colors and rich shadows to capture the &#8216;larger than life&#8217; visuals inherent in the video game format. </p>
<p>Definitely an artist to keep your eye on!

Instead of restricting user interaction to text, links, images and forms, HTML5 promotes multimedia, from a generic <code>&lt;object&gt;</code> element to a highly specified <code>&lt;video&gt;</code> and <code>&lt;audio&gt;</code> element, and with a rich API to access in pure JavaScript.</p>
<p>Native multimedia capability has a few benefits:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>End users have full control over the multimedia.</strong><br /> The native controls of browsers allow users to save videos locally or email them to friends. Also, HTML5 video and audio are keyboard-enabled by default, which is a great accessibility benefit.</li>
<li><strong>End users do not need to install a plug-in to play them.</strong><br /> The browser already has everything it needs to play movies and sound.</li>
<li><strong>Video and audio content on the page can be manipulated.</strong><br /> They are simply two new elements like any other that can be styled, moved, manipulated, stacked and rotated.</li>
<li><strong>You can build your own controls using HTML, CSS and JavaScript.</strong><br /> No new skills or development environment needed.</li>
<li><strong>Interaction with the rest of the page is simple.</strong><br /> The multimedia API gives you full control over the video, and you can make the video react both to changes in the video itself and to the page around it.</li>
</ul>
<p>Let’s quickly recap how you can use native video in the browser, starting with the embedding task.</p>
<h3>Embedding Video</h3>
<p>This is old news. Embedding video in a document is as easy as adding a <code>&lt;video&gt;</code> element and pointing it to the source video. Adding a <code>controls</code> attribute gives you native controls:</p>
<pre class="brush: xml">
&lt;video src=&quot;chris.ogv&quot; controls&gt;&lt;/video&gt;
</pre>
<p>This is the theory, though. In the real world of intellectual property, corporate competition and device-specific solutions, we as developers have to jump through a few hoops:</p>
<pre class="brush: xml">
&lt;video controls=&quot;true&quot; height=&quot;295&quot; width=&quot;480&quot;&gt;
  &lt;!-- hello iOS, Safari and IE9 --&gt;
  &lt;source src=&quot;chris.mp4&quot; type=&quot;video/mp4&quot;&gt;
  &lt;!-- Hello Chrome and Firefox (and Opera?) --&gt;
  &lt;source src=&quot;chris.webm&quot; type=&quot;video/webm&quot;&gt;
  &lt;!-- Hello Firefox and Opera --&gt;
  &lt;source src=&quot;chris.ogv&quot; type=&quot;video/ogg&quot;&gt;
  &lt;!-- Hello legacy --&gt;
  Your browser does not support the video tag,
  &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IhkUe_KryGY&quot;&gt;
    check the video on YouTube
  &lt;/a&gt;.
&lt;/video&gt;
</pre>
<p>This shows how we need to deliver video in three formats in order to satisfy all of the different browsers out there. There are a few ways to accomplish this. Here’s what I do…</p>
<h3>Convert Video With Miro Video Converter</h3>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Miro_Video_Converter/378/4">Miro Video Converter</a> is an open-source tool for Mac that makes converting videos dead easy. Simply drag the video to the tool, select WebM as the output format, and watch the progress. A few <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/other_converters_for_Windows_and_Linux/378/5">other converters for Windows and Linux</a> are available, too.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/378/6"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/miro.png" alt="Miro in Syncing Content With HTML5 Video"  /></a></p>
<h3>Hosting And Automated Conversion On Archive.org</h3>
<p>Because I license my videos with <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Creative_Commons/378/7">Creative Commons</a>, I can use <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Archive_org/378/8">Archive.org</a> to both host the videos and convert the WebM versions to MP4 and OGV. Simply upload your video and wait about an hour. Reload the page, and the server pixies at Archive.org will have created the other two formats (and also a cool animated GIF of your video).</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/378/9"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/archive-org.jpg" width="550" height="449" alt="Archive-org in Syncing Content With HTML5 Video"  /></a><br /><em>You can use <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Archive_org/378/10">Archive.org</a> to both host the videos and convert the WebM versions to MP4 and OGV. <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Large_view/378/11">Large view</a>.</em></p>
<h3>Industrial-Strength Conversion With Vid.ly</h3>
<p>WebM, OGV and MP4 take care of only the major browsers, though. If you want to support all mobile devices, tablets and consoles and you want the video quality to adapt to the user’s connection speed, then you’ll have to create a few dozen versions of the same video. Encoding.com feels our pain and has released a free service called <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Vid_ly/378/12">Vid.ly</a>, which converts any video you upload into many different formats more or less in real time. Unfortunately, the service is in private beta at the moment, but you can use the invite code <code>HNY2011</code>.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/378/13"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/vid-ly.jpg" width="550" height="587" alt="Vid-ly in Syncing Content With HTML5 Video"  /></a><br /><em><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Vid_ly/378/14">Vid.ly</a> converts any video you upload into many different formats more or less in real time. <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Large_view/378/15">Large view</a>.</em></p>
<p>Furthermore, Vid.ly creates a URL for your video that automatically redirects the browser or device calling it to the right format. This keeps your embed code as simple as possible:</p>
<pre class="brush: xml">
&lt;video src=&quot;http://vid.ly/4f3q1f?content=video&quot; controls&gt;&lt;/video&gt;
</pre>
<p>Cool, isn’t it?</p>
<h3>The Power Of The HTML5 Video API: Syncing Content</h3>
<p>Now that our video is on the page, let’s check out the power of the API. Say, for example, you want to know what part of the movie is playing right now. This is as simple as subscribing to an event of the <code>&lt;video&gt;</code> element:</p>
<pre class="brush: js">
&lt;div id=&quot;stage&quot;&gt;
  &lt;video src=&quot;http://vid.ly/4f3q1f?content=video&quot; controls&gt;&lt;/video&gt;
  &lt;div id=&quot;time&quot;&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;script&gt;
  (function(){
    var v = document.getElementsByTagName('video')[0]
    var t = document.getElementById('time');
    v.addEventListener('timeupdate',function(event){
      t.innerHTML = v.currentTime;
    },false);
  })();
&lt;/script&gt;
</pre>
<p>If you <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/try_this_out/378/16">try this out</a> in your browser, you will see the current time below the video when you play it.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/378/17"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/time.png" alt="Time in Syncing Content With HTML5 Video"  /></a></p>
<p>You will also see that the <code>timeupdate</code> event gets fired a lot and at somewhat random times. If you want to use this to sync the showing and hiding of parts of the document, then you’ll need to throttle it somehow. The easiest way to do this is to <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/limit_the_number_to_full_seconds/378/18">limit the number to full seconds</a> using <code>parseInt()</code>:</p>
<pre class="brush: xml">
&lt;div id=&quot;stage&quot;&gt;
  &lt;video src=&quot;http://vid.ly/4f3q1f?content=video&quot; controls&gt;&lt;/video&gt;
  &lt;div id=&quot;time&quot;&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;script&gt;
  (function(){
    var v = document.getElementsByTagName('video')[0]
    var t = document.getElementById('time');
    v.addEventListener('timeupdate',function(event){
      t.innerHTML = parseInt(v.currentTime) + ' - ' + v.currentTime;
    },false);
  })();
&lt;/script&gt;
</pre>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/378/19"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/timesecond.png" alt="Timesecond in Syncing Content With HTML5 Video"  /></a></p>
<p>You can use this to trigger functionality at certain times. For example, you can sync an <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Indiana_Jones_style_animation_of_a_map_to_a_video/378/20">Indiana Jones-style animation of a map to a video</a>:</p>
<p><iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/KNNzP6fyOyQ?rel=0" frameborder="0"></iframe></p>
<p>For a full explanation of this demo, check out the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/blog_post_on_Mozilla_Hacks/378/21">blog post on Mozilla Hacks</a>.</p>
<p>Let’s have a go at something similar: a video that shows the content from web pages being referred to by a presenter. Check out <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/this_video_demo_of_me_explaining_what_we_re_doing_here/378/22">this video demo of me explaining what we’re doing here</a>, with the content appearing and disappearing at certain times in the video. Make sure to jump around the video with the controls.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/378/23"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/syncing.jpg" width="550" height="316" alt="Syncing in Syncing Content With HTML5 Video"  /></a></p>
<p>We’ve already covered how to get the current time of a video in seconds. What I want now is to display and hide a few parts of the website at certain times in the video. If video is not supported in the browser, then I would just <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/show_all_of_the_content_without_any_syncing/378/24">show all of the content without any syncing</a>.</p>
<p>The first issue I have to solve is to allow the maintainer to control what is shown when. Normally, I’d use a JSON object in the JavaScript, but I figure that keeping the maintenance in the markup itself makes much more sense.</p>
<p>HTML5 allows you to store information in <code>data-</code> attributes. So, to make it easy to tell the script when to show what, I just use <code>data-start</code> and <code>data-end</code> attributes, which define the time frames for the articles that I want to sync with the video:</p>
<pre class="brush: xml">&lt;article data-start=&quot;64&quot; data-end=&quot;108&quot;&gt;
  &lt;header&gt;&lt;h1&gt;Archive.org for conversion&lt;/h1&gt;&lt;/header&gt;
  &lt;p&gt;&lt;a href=&quot;http://archive.org&quot;&gt;Archive.org&lt;/a&gt; is a website dedicated to
archiving the Internet. For content released as under a Creative Commons
license, it offers hosting for video and audio and automatically converts the
content to MP4 and Ogg video for you.&lt;/p&gt;
  &lt;iframe src=&quot;http://archive.org&quot;&gt;&lt;/iframe&gt;
&lt;/article&gt;</pre>
<p>You can try it out by <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/downloading_the_code/378/25">downloading the code</a> and changing the values yourself (or use Firebug or the Web Inspector to change it on the fly).</p>
<p>Here’s the script (using jQuery) that makes this happen:</p>
<pre class="brush: js">
/* if the document is ready… */
$(document).ready(function(){

/* if HTML5 video is supported */
  if($('video').attr('canPlayType')){

    $('aside::first').append('&lt;p&gt;Play the video above and see how ' +
                             'the different connected content sections ' +
                             'in the page appear at the right moment. '+
                             'Feel free to jump forward and backward&lt;/p&gt;');

    var timestamps = [],
        last = 0,
        all = 0,
        now = 0,
        old = 0,
        i=0;

/* hide all articles via CSS */
    $('html').addClass('js');

/*
   Loop over the articles, read the timestamp start and end and store
   them in an array
*/
    $('article').each(function(o){
      if($(this).attr('data-start')){
        timestamps.push({
          start : +$(this).attr('data-start'),
          end : +$(this).attr('data-end'),
          elm : $(this)
        });
      }
    });

    all = timestamps.length;

/*
  when the video is playing, round up the time to seconds and call the
  showsection function continuously
*/
    $('video').bind('timeupdate',function(event){
      now = parseInt(this.currentTime);

      /* throttle function calls to full seconds */
      if(now &gt; old){
        showsection(now);
      }
      old = now;

    });

/*
  Test whether the current time is within the range of any of the
  defined timestamps and show the appropriate section.
  Hide all others.
*/
    function showsection(t){
      for(i=0;i&lt;all;i++){
        if(t &gt;= timestamps[i].start &amp;&amp; t &lt;= timestamps[i].end){
          timestamps[i].elm.addClass('current');
        } else {
          timestamps[i].elm.removeClass('current');
        }
      }
    };

  };
});</pre>
<p>So, what’s going on here? First, we’re checking whether the browser is capable of playing HTML5 video by testing for the <code>canPlayType</code> attribute. If all is fine, then we add some explanatory text to the document (which wouldn’t make sense if the browser couldn’t show a video). Then, we define some variables to use and add a class of <code>js</code> to the root element of the document. This, together with the <code>.js article</code> selector in the CSS, hides all of the articles in the document.</p>
<p>We then loop through the articles, read out the timestamps for the start and end of each of the sections and store them in an array called <code>timestamps</code>.</p>
<p>We then subscribe to the <code>timeupdate</code> event, rounded up to full seconds, and call the <code>showsection()</code> function every new second.</p>
<p>The <code>showsection()</code> function loops through all of the timestamps and tests whether the current time of the video is in the range of one of the articles. If it is, then that article is displayed (by adding a <code>current</code> class) and all the others are hidden. This could be optimized by storing the current section and removing the class from only that element.</p>
<h3>Can We Do The Same With Less Or No Code?</h3>
<p>If you like the idea of syncing content and video, check out the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Popcorn_framework/378/26">Popcorn framework</a>, which is based on the same techniques but gives you much more control over the video itself.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/378/27"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/popcorn.gif" width="550" height="605" alt="Popcorn in Syncing Content With HTML5 Video"  /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Butter/378/28">Butter</a> is a point-and-click interface to go on top of Popcorn. It has a nice timeline editor that allows you to play a video and show all kinds of Web content at certain times. You can export and send your creations to friends, too.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/378/29"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/butter.jpg" width="550" height="380" alt="Butter in Syncing Content With HTML5 Video" alt="Butter in action" /></a><br /><em><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Large_view/378/30">Large view</a></em></p>
<p>With systems like Popcorn and Butter, we are one step closer to having authoring tools for the rich interactions that HTML5 offers us. What can you think of building?</p>
<h3>Summary</h3>
<p>Today we looked at how to embed video onto a Web document; and with the native video API that gives us event handlers for changes in a video, we saw how easy it is to make the video interact with the rest of the document. Instead of trying to control the video, we use native controls to make the page react to what is happening in the video itself. We used semantic HTML and data attributes to allow maintainers to use the syncing script without having to touch any JavaScript, and we looked at some services that make hosting and converting video easy.</p>
<p>All of these cool technologies give us a lot of power, but we can’t just, say, write some simple CSS, JavaScript and HTML to use them. If we want open technologies to succeed, then we have to make them easy for people to use. The next step now is to move from the “one-off implementation” phase and think about creating tools and step-by-step code-creation systems for users who want to use these cool new technologies but don’t want to spend much time and effort doing it.</p>
<p>With native audio and video in browsers, we’ve taken a massive step toward make the open Web more engaging and beautiful. The next step will be to use multimedia not only for output but for input. A lot of hardware these days comes with cameras and microphones; we need to start using and supporting open technology that allows our users to take advantage of this hardware to interact with our Web products.</p>

<p>Since its early days, video has been one of the most powerful and efficient tools of visual communication. It is able to deliver a direct and clear message to a broad audience as well as focus viewers on something particular. A visually appealing video is an excellent way to present a product, service or brand and take user experience to a much more interactive level. For this reason, elegant, creative and professional videos are becoming increasingly popular in Web design today.</p>
<p>Some designers go even further, creating Bluray-like experience in the browser, with interactive navigation menus, soft transitions and exceptional visual effects &mdash; all supported with background videos. This can be done with Flash or <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/HTML5/303/4">HTML5</a>, however, most websites incorporate background videos using only Flash. To enable the rich cross-device experience, it is worth considering adding fallback-videos for those users who have a browser that does not support Flash. Nevertheless, we didn&#8217;t want to go into technical details just yet and wanted to see what actual approaches designers take within their websites.</p>
<p>The performance of a website including a background video depends significantly on the speed of the user’s internet connection. Video backgrounds certainly do not fit in every setting; they wouldn&#8217;t be meaningful in online magazines or blogs. However, <strong>they can work really well in entertainment and certain corporate settings</strong> which are supposed to communicate artistic qualities, exclusivity, branding or even high quality standards. As you will see, they work very well in portfolio websites, fashion websites and promotional campaigns. Below you’ll find a showcase of good and not so good websites that implement this dynamic eye candy at full screen.</p>
<h3>Fashion Websites: Clothes, Shoes, Jewellery</h3>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Bulgari_B_Zero1/303/5">Bulgari B.Zero1</a><br />Bulgari, an Italian jeweller and luxury goods retailer, uses a background video to showcase (or “celebrate”) its new B.Zero1 line. Although the implementation is natural and done well, once again there is a strong potential for making the browser slow that would cause the website to run less than optimally. This may be the reason that Bulgari avoids using background videos on every page and use small versions instead; but then those videos feel underwhelming as a result, given the grandeur of the products being sold. The overall feel is very much like on DVDs, with interactive navigation menus, soft transitions and visually exceptional graphics.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/6"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground12.jpg" alt="Videobackground12 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Uniqlock/303/7">Uniqlock</a><br /> Uniqlock is an advertising campaign for Uniqlo, one of Japan&#8217;s largest casual wear retailers. By including the video dance routines, time-signal music and clock utilities, the designers craft a unique experience using the background video technique. This is a virtual 24/7 presentation of Uniqlo clothing done with creativity and style. It won one of six Black Pencils in the online advertising category at the D&#038;AD Awards 2008 in London.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/8"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground13.jpg" alt="Videobackground13 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Gudrun_og_Gudrun/303/9">Gudrun og Gudrun</a><br /> Gudrun og Gudrun is a hand-made clothing brand by two knitwear designers from the Faroe Islands. The designers use background video to showcase their fashion show, and they use it throughout the website, with subtle transitions via various elements. An interesting use case, even if somewhat taxing on some users’ systems. The site is a bit older than others, yet it still is interesting and attractive.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Jay_Jays_Dance_Off/303/11">Jay Jays Dance/Off</a><br /> Dance/Off is an interactive 3-D online catalogue for the new line by youth fashion brand Jay Jays. This website is truly exceptional in concept, but not so in execution. The 3-D approach is innovative but also makes the website (which is effectively a fashion ad) impractical. Without 3-D capabilities (and that would be most homes thus far), users would find the videos pixelated and visually unappealing. The interactive element is also conceptually intriguing, but with the long loading time and numerous instructions for using the website, most users would probably just move on. Besides, the page takes way too much time to load, even on the broadband connection. A nice touch: you can navigate the website using your keyboard.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Yves_Rocher_Tout_le_Film/303/13">Yves Rocher: Tout le Film</a><br /> “Ce qui est essentiel rend belle” is a promotional short video that anchors this website. The video challenges the taboo of sexuality at any age, highlighting its biological benefits. The rest of the website is subtle and stylistically simple, making it easy on system resources. The video doesn&#8217;t start playing automatically, but requires user to click on the large green &#8220;Play&#8221; button first. Simple and user-friendly.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/14"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground16.jpg" alt="Videobackground16 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Louis_Vuitton_Journeys/303/15">Louis Vuitton Journeys</a><br /> Louis Vuitton Journeys is an advertising campaign features three soccer legends, Zinedine Zidane, Pele and Diego Maradona. The intro to the video plays a little too fast to catch everything as it loads, but otherwise it is handled well. The video navigation and transitions are smooth, and the videos themselves are somewhat interactive.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/16"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground01.jpg" alt="Videobackground01 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/John_Galliano/303/17">John Galliano</a><br /> John Galliano is a Gibraltarian-British fashion label; here, the video begins on the main page and takes over your sound and drains your system resources. The navigation is a little too fluid, making it difficult at times to quickly jump around to where you want to go. As you move deeper into the website, the background becomes less system-intensive, and each page opens in the current tab, freeing up the sound and CPU from the home page. The video introduction on the front page is interesting and not too obtrusive, but the music should not start automatically when the page is loaded.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/18"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground03.jpg" alt="Videobackground03 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Valentino/303/19">Valentino</a><br /> Valentino is an international clothing company based in Italy. It does a much subtler and less intrusive variation on this technique. Although video elements play throughout the website (e.g. on the &#8220;Haute Couture&#8221; page), the home page does not automatically start a big video until you select one navigation item. And because you are prompted to begin the videos, your sound is not taken over until you decide. More user-friendly, better, cleaner design.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/20"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground04.jpg" alt="Videobackground04 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Byblos/303/21">Byblos</a> (-> Runway)<br /> Byblos is an Italian fashion house that uses video backgrounds very subtly. The splash page is a single frame, and sound runs continuously through the website unless you turn it off. But once you get past the splash page, the only really resource-sapping videos are limited to certain sections of the website, namely the “Runway” section. This feels like a more natural use of this technique; the whole website is not overly resource-dependent and prone to lagging on slow connections.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/22"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground06.jpg" alt="Videobackground06 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Nike_M6/303/23">Nike: M6</a><br /> Jordan Melo’s sixth signature shoe by Nike is the subject of the background video featured here; it is a multi-part behind-the-scenes look at the new product design. Once again, there is a potential lag issue because the videos are very big and looped continuously. Rather than automatically transitioning from one video segment to the next, the website could just as easily have paused and prompted the user to move on, giving them a breath to digest what they just saw. Controls for pausing the videos are available, so the user has the option, but automatic pauses would have helped here.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/24"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground10.jpg" alt="Videobackground10 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="241" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Anti_Sweden/303/25">Anti Sweden</a><br /> Anti Sweden is a Norwegian fashion brand that subtly employs background video to complement its minimalist approach. Without the heavy graphics and sound that usually accompany this technique, the website is not as resource-intensive as some others, which is a nice change. The website demonstrates how the technique can be a lightweight yet completely engaging concept.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/26"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground14.jpg" alt="Videobackground14 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/I_Surf_Because/303/27">I Surf Because</a><br /> The “I Surf Because” site is part of Billabong&#8217;s digital marketing campaign. Here, Billabong uses a background video on the home page to push its campaign, but the technique is absent on deeper pages. This makes the website more CPU friendly, even though the embedded YouTube videos inside feel a bit lacking after the effect of the home page. An interesting idea: sometimes videos pause, show a tagline allowing for a comfortable reading and then continue again.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/28"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground11.jpg" alt="Videobackground11 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Vibram_FiveFingers/303/29">Vibram FiveFingers</a> (<em>Be cautious</em>: NSFW!)<br /> FiveFingers is a shoe brand manufactured by Vibram, which has conceived an entire website driven by background videos. The execution is certainly interesting. With unique fluid navigation elements throughout the website, this interactive video features both the product itself and relevant data, making for a truly unique concept that is perfect for this technique. The splash page lets users choose if they want to see a normal site, a fullscreen site and if they are on low bandwidth connection.</p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Sam_Edelman/303/30">Sam Edelman</a><br /> Sam Edelman, a fashionable shoe brand, shows that one can achieve certain level of interaction without videos. In this case, subtle animations are used instead of streaming videos. The overall website is understated, as is the tone and theme of the background video, which is nicely done. Also, no sound takes over your system, a refreshing change up till now. A nice alternative to video backgrounds.</p>

The website creatively employs background video to some of its fullest and funnest potential. A promotional website which is essentially an interactive show-off with rich, creative, sophisticated imagery and navigation. Created by <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/North_Kingdom/303/33">North Kingdom</a> (Stockholm, Sweden) in collaboration with Saatchi &#038; Saatchi LA (Los Angeles, USA).</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Scion/303/35">Scion</a><br /> The official website for the Toyota Scion is another website where video background seems a bit underused. The website does not take over your sound to add to the video background, although numerous video transitions feel like they should have had sound; thus the videos feel lacking or somewhat broken in parts. Other videos open in smaller separate windows, once again feeling like a missed opportunity to employ the technique. By the way: the font size on the page is way too small.</p>

<h3>Beverages And Food Websites</h3>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/LemonAid/303/37">LemonAid</a><br /> LemonAid is an organic drink made entirely of a few organic, fair-trade ingredients, and the company uses a retro-styled background video to tell everyone what it’s all about. On entering the main website, system resource usage goes up significantly, which for some users will mean a bit of drag on the video and sound. Despite this, the concept is fairly simple, and the implementation works well for the product. One major drawback: the font size is way too small.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/38"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground20.jpg" alt="Videobackground20 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>

In both cases, the visuals are quite vivid and remarkable. Overall, a good, elegant fit for the brand.</p>

According to the website, the experience is a scare that is too personal for the cinema. But for all the time required to go through the website, one ends up seeing little correlation between the product and these overproduced horror sequences.</p>

<h3>Music And Dance Websites</h3>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/White_Lies/303/55">White Lies</a><br /> White Lies is an alternative rock band from Ealing, west London, that uses background videos to play its music videos while the user browses the rest of the website. Designers have made a poor choice for the resolution of the displayed video: at large resolutions, it looks very pixelated and blurry — even a bit larger resolution would work much better. Most navigation actions do not disrupt the playing either, because external links open in new tabs, leaving the slightly resource-heavy video to continue playing. Also, even though the website is for a music band, the website opens with the sound muted by default, which is a nice change.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Sick_City_Club/303/57">Sick City Club</a><br /> Sick City Club is an indie rock quartet from Birmingham, England, that employs the technique of playing its videos while the user looks around. New content slides in from the side, never disrupting or creating lag for the video. This is somewhat unusual among the websites featured here, most of which have elements that are complex or resource-heavy. The elements here seem to be simple and lightweight, which suit the website well.</p>

It uses background video for ambience as the user engages with the unique navigation. The difference here, though, is that the music videos that play in the background are not necessarily theirs. In fact, in a bit of short-sightedness, the band’s music videos open in smaller players while the background video continues, thereby draining the CPU even more than necessary and causing both the music and background video to skip and drag.</p>

The website looks sparse at first and it features just a single music video, but with several interesting elements thrown in so that the viewer can sort of play along as the video plays. Still a bit heavy on resources, even for such a minimal approach, but that is to be expected.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Byblos/303/77">Byblos</a><br /> Byblos is a dance club in Porec, Croatia. It uses video background not only to show footage of the club itself, but to establish the tone and attitude of this hotspot. The website is hard on the system, but you are told that from the start, so be prepared. The transitions and overlays fit right in with the background, and they work well together and don’t detract from each another.</p>

<h3>Advertising, Design Agencies and Film Studios</h3>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Razorfish/303/79">Razorfish</a><br /> Razorfish is an interactive agency for marketing, experience and enterprise design. <p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Less_Rain/303/81">Less Rain</a><br /> Less Rain is a digital creative agency with offices in London, Berlin and Tokyo. Its site uses background video to complement the ambience of the rest of the website. However, as on other websites, the videos in the gallery open in a separate player, rather than in the background (where the main video stops playing). With the kind of work being showcased, a bigger presentation seems more suitable.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/1stAveMachine/303/83">1stAveMachine</a><br /> 1stAveMachine is an NYC-based CGI, visual effects and animation studio that uses video background to enrich its website experience. Video sequences that play in the background do not always complement the navigable elements; they make the content displayed over top of it illegible in many instances.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/IDEAL_Production_Company/303/85">IDEAL Production Company</a><br /> Ideal Production Company is a motion-design studio from Warsaw, Poland, that uses an interactive navigation element to enhance the background video employed throughout the website. This navigation also seems to be the reason that most videos on the website play in a smaller separate player. Still, given the nature of these videos, the smaller presentation does work here.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/BlackBeltMonkey/303/87">BlackBeltMonkey</a><br /> BlackBeltMonkey is a German communications and interactive design agency that has a subtler variation on background videos. While adding unique and whimsical interactive elements, the designers manage to keep the background from interfering with the content almost perfectly. There are some instances of text and background colors matching, rendering some of the headings partially illegible.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Marketel/303/89">Marketel</a><br /> Marketel, one of the largest advertising agencies in Quebec, Canada, uses background video and with a responsive hover element to boot. The stylish background adds sophistication, and it remains active during all of the other interactions on the website. But when the television ads run in the gallery, the background can create a heavy lag for some users.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Designkitchen/303/91">Designkitchen</a><br /> Designkitchen is an interactive design agency that delivers award-winning digital branding across multiple channels: social, viral, mobile and Web. It uses background video throughout its website, with various supplementary videos depending where you navigate to. The videos, especially in the news section, repeat themselves (sometimes alternating, but rarely) making them a bit distracting. Also, the portfolio has some white text against a white background, creating some difficulty there as well.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Working_Element/303/95">Working Element</a><br /> Working Element LLC is a collective made up of directors, photographers, writers, compositors, editors, photo illustrators, designers and cinematographers. The site uses background video to show the truth of its name. But as the large still gallery opens up, the video continues to play behind it, feeling a bit overstimulating. Again, the idea has promise but could use some tweaking.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/96"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground51.jpg" alt="Videobackground51 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Metaproject/303/97">Metaproject</a><br /> Metaproject is a creative agency based in New York. Its background video is in some ways subtler and in other ways grander than others we’ve seen, but never intrusive or distracting, which is not always easy to achieve as we have seen. The transitions are smooth, and the background varies with the pages and projects in the gallery.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/98"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground52.jpg" alt="Videobackground52 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="241" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/MediaNovak/303/99">MediaNovak</a><br /> Media Novak&#8217;s background video is handled impressively, with little overstimulation. But it drops the ball in the portfolio section. The background fills with a wall of thumbnails, but it scrolls too quickly at times depending on the position of your mouse. There is no resting point. When you open a window, the wall continues to scroll behind it, which can be distracting or unpleasant for some users.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/100"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/medianovak.jpg" alt="Medianovak in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Filmhouse/303/101">Filmhouse</a><br /> Filmhouse is a film production studio that uses a combination of background video techniques throughout its website (ranging from moderate to heavy use of system resources as well). As on other websites, this one opens up the videos in its portfolio in smaller windows, even shutting down the background entirely. But after the grand tour of the facility in the background, these smaller portfolio pieces feel a bit underwhelming.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/102"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground55.jpg" alt="Videobackground55 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="241" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/About_blank/303/103">About:blank</a><br /> About:blank uses this technique harmoniously throughout. With the fluid, smoke-like effect playing through a halftone overlay in the background, the website comes across as sleek and well crafted. And the fact that the video continues to play without impeding the readability of the text over top of it shows how well this effect can be implemented with such simplicity.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/104"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground56.jpg" alt="Videobackground56 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="241" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/BM8/303/105">BM8</a><br /> BM8 Bildmacht is a Hamburg-based film production studio that uses background video in two distinct ways. First, you can play with its portfolio of projects, which opens in the full browser window; and once you enter the website, the background is a continuously flowing video that entertainingly introduces you to the company. The videos are also available as lightboxex, so you can skip to specific parts or simply let them play through.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/From_Scratch_Design_Studio/303/107">From Scratch Design Studio</a><br /> From Scratch&#8217;s background video is heavy and as results it often causes problems with navigating the website. However, the implementation here shows some interesting ideas. For example, while the videos in the portfolio section open in smaller windows, separate from the page, they do not feel like a break in the flow of the website. The transition feels like a natural fit.</p>
<p class="showcase"><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/link/303/108"><img src="http://media.smashingmagazine.com/cdn_smash/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/videobackground58.jpg" alt="Videobackground58 in Creative Use Of Video in Web Design: Background Videos" width="500" height="242" /></a></p>
<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/Hipopotam_Studio/303/109">Hipopotam Studio</a><br /> This small talented design studio of two people from Warsaw, Poland, implements this technique site-wide. Thus, the lag factor can get a bit much at times. However, when viewing projects in the portfolio, system usage drops rather significantly; even though video is used here, it is done in a subtle yet still interactive way.</p>

<p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/9elements/303/111">9elements</a><br /> 9elements uses background video for its main website and all accompanying material but abandons it on its blog. <p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tutsrus.com/goto/GDSH/303/113">GDSH</a><br /> GDSH&#8217;s background video is very subtle, almost imperceptible. Whereas many sites displayed above use the technique as a focal point, here it serves simply as the background, and without interfering with the content, as a background should.</p>

<p><strong>Making The Most Out Of A Photo Shop Video Tutorial &#8211; What Can It Offer?</strong></p>
<p>In today&#8217;s world of computers, it would seem so impossible if you have not even heard of Adobe Photo Shop. It hails among the most important programs of today, being the leading photo-processing and graphics software in the market. Learning how to use this program is already a prerequisite for anyone who wants to venture into digital visual arts. It is therefore not surprising why there are tons of photo shop tutorials out there. People really want to learn how to use the program. But among tutorials, the best type for learning is probably the photo shop video tutorial. </p>
<p>&#13;In all fairness to other types of photo shop tutorials, normal photo shop instructional resources are indeed very useful. They teach people a wide range ways to use photo shop to their advantage. However, most of these usual tutorial versions can be hard to follow since they only tell people what to do, but not necessarily show them how to do it. When such is the case, it would really be helpful to see what is being taught. This is normally something that people taking photo shop classes can enjoy, but now even people at home can learn photo shop and see how it is down with the help of a photo shop video tutorial. </p>
<p>&#13;What a Photo Shop Video Tutorial Can Teach You</p>
<p>&#13;There are many specific types of photo shop video tutorials available, some very specialized while others very simple. However, they have a common goal of making you understand the capabilities of photo shop better and make use of them for your own projects. Some photo shop video tutorials teach basic stuff about the program. This type of tutorial instructs users in making themselves familiar with software &#8211; its regular menus, common tools and basic functionalities. </p>
<p>&#13;There are also photo shop video tutorials that teach more specific functions of the program. Some specifically teach the color enhancing and manipulation capabilities of photo shop that help adjust the tints or hues of photos. There are also photo shop video tutorials that teach users how to scan pictures for optimum quality. While other tutorials instruct the various ways of editing pictures to make them even more interesting than they already are. These tutorials are very useful for photographers, both digital and film users. </p>
<p>&#13;Other photo shop video tutorials teach more advanced functionalities of the program. There are tutorials that teach how to make effects out text, making them even more interesting and very catchy. Others show how to make special effects out of images to make them even more appealing, exciting, or fascinating to viewers. There are some that how to come up with textures that make pictures pop out into real life. These tutorials are very useful for the more advanced graphics designers and visual artists. </p>
<p>&#13;Where to Look for Photo Shop Video Tutorials</p>
<p>&#13;There are many places to look for photo shop video tutorials. Most software stores have them on stock together with video tutorials for other software. Tutorials can also be found online through various instructional websites sites that offer those who want to learn how to use the program. The good thing about them is that they can easily be reached via the Internet and some of them are even for free. </p>
<p>&#13;Here are some websites that offer photo shop video tutorials:</p>

<p>&#13;Learning photo shop is now very easy thanks to video tutorials.</p>
